The History of Southern Commercial Divers...
Established in 1972, Southern Commercial Divers is a family-owned business by Les Griffin, his wife Robyn and their son, Jamie. With over 40 years experience, Southern Commercial Divers has consistently provided the highest standard of commercial diving services to clients both in Australia and overseas.
Southern Commercial Divers offer a diverse repertoire of services including underwater concreting and welding, dredging, underwater reservoir cleaning, salvaging, bridge and wharf repairs and underwater photo and video inspections.
Les has always had a keen interest in working in the water. He began his career as a young swimming instructor in Bulli when he was only 12 years old. Les began recreational diving when he was 11 and later became an underwater diving instructor.
In 1972, Les discovered the opportunity to utilise his diving skills and experience to teach others how to dive, which inspired him to open his own diving school. The success of the school combined with Les' keenness to continue working underwater eventually founded Southern Commercial Divers, which offered underwater repairs and services to the Illawarra and surrounding areas.
Les joined the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) in 1976, then he became a Master Diving Instructor in 1978, forming the PADI Australia Review Committee. Les is a fully qualified panel beater, Dive Supervisor and Qualified Diver qualified with the Australian Diving Accreditation Scheme (ADAS), and holds an Underwater Explosives Certificate. He continually aims to maintain and improve his accreditations in safety and compliance in order to maintain and assure the safety of all his employees and clients.
Les' son Jamie is the co-owner and Operator of Southern Commercial Divers. Like his father, Jamie has been in the water since he was a small boy. Getting his first taste for diving at only four years old, Jamie was a experienced diver by the age of 14 and working for Southern Commercial Divers during his school holidays. Upon completion of his High School Certificate, Jamie joined Southern Commercial Divers on a full time basis. He began his career as a diver, making swift progressions to diving supervisor and then operations manager of the company.
Some of Jamie's major achievements with the company include salvaging of large wrecks. He also has extensive experience as an Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) pilot, using the device for difficult conditions such as clouded and dark water, confined spaces and dangerous environments. Jamie is also a specialist in jobs involving potable water with a comprehensive understanding of fresh water systems. He has been involved in major projects involving potable water, such as ongoing jobs with Sydney Water.
Today, Southern Commercial Divers has expanded their clientele to work in local and international waters, frequently traveling to Indonesia for repeat offers of work.
They also operate a 24 hour service to Port and Harbour Authorities, BlueScope Steel, BHP Billiton, Water Authorities and other Government bodies.
The benefits of a family operated business means that customers are guaranteed a personal and professional analysis of their job requirements and given a solution that best represents the needs of their situation.
Les and Jamie's combined experience allows them to work together with their qualified and exceptional team of divers to ensure they continually deliver safety and job satisfaction to every client, every time.
